Oye. Pre-teens

Chelsea was my first best friend. Her friendship owned 4th and 5th grade. We were enthusiastic, zany, and creative. We were absurd, we were a laugh. We bought plastic fish and fed them pepper. We snuck on to the golf course to wade in the water traps. We invented secret languages. We rode our bikes all over town, but laughed so hard at our jokes that we were always falling off or crashing. We collected key chains, died over Lisa Frank stationary, and traded stickers. We read books by the dozens (mine- babysitter's club, her- box car children) and I tried to hide snacks all over my room like Claudia in bsc but they always went stale immediately.

One time I remember using puff paint and glitter fabric paint to decorate these plain baseball caps that Chelsea had. A dream afternoon! We had a blast, and you know we looked smokin in those homemade puff paint hats. Later that night my dad somehow talked Chelsea and I into going to the high school football game and we decided to sport our cool new looks. The minute we walked over to the stands we realized what a terrible idea this was. Our cool new glitter hats were actually hideous. No one should ever see us wear these hats. Ever.

The following is a snapshot of our conversation and thought process:
Did you see? What? Well.... was that Bobby Carter? BOBBY CARTER?! Quick!! Hats off! OMG! What is up with your hair? You have such bad hat head!! Oh no... do I?? Does my hair look as bad? It does?! Quick! Hats back on! Now what? Let's go to the bathroom and see how bad our hat hair is. Ok. (Now comes the bad news that we leave in a seriously small town in Montana where there are no mirrors in bathrooms at outdoor high school stadiums.) Well.... I guess we will just have to wear the hats, try and sit by your dad and hide as much as we can. Yeah. And keep a hand over the most decorated parts of the hat for the entire game. Ok, yeah good idea.

Fast forward a few hours later to when I'm home and my mom asks if I had fun. How do I even begin to explain such an evening? Ummmm, yeah, it was ok seems like the easiest way to sum it up. And of course I need to respond in my most snarky and prickly voice because in fact the evening has been a stressful nightmare.

I am now a mom in that land mine field.

I cheer too loud. (This I know. No embarrassed child needs to tell me this.)

I have a child who wants to learn about ninjitsu. Asking a karate instructor if he knows anything about ninjitsu would apparently be the worst, most terrible, embarrassing idea ever. Duh.

I have a child who needs to stay after school for tutoring a few times a week until 4:30. I suggest packing a snack in his backpack. (Homemade chocolate chip cookies! Not even something truly embarrassing like raisins!) This is apparently the worst, most terrible, embarrassing idea ever. Duh. This child even had a nightmare about bringing a snack and everyone teasing him.

I have a child who enjoys going to high school basketball games. This child sees a friend. I suggest he ask the friend to sit with us, thus having the worst, most terrible, embarrassing idea ever. Duh.

I have a child who delights in karate. He is a dedicated and hard-working student who is always eager to learn all things karate. We go home from a lesson and we have a couple friends over for dinner. My child stay in the laundry room (closest room to the garage) forever because he can't be seen wearing his t-shirt and black wind pants. (This is the same child who regularly and mistakenly wears his t-shrit backwards.) I suggest he walk to his room quickly and change back into his normal clothes (a t-shirt and athletic shorts.... quite a bit different from what he is wearing hahaha) but apparently this is the worst, most terrible, embarrassing idea ever. Duh!

I think it may be safe to say we have entered the phase where a fun, special lunch brought to school is super duper appreciated, even more so if that lunch is dropped off by a mom who has no intentions of staying to sit and eat as well.

Oye! Hopefully I can continue to remember my own asinine mood swings before I judge those around me too harshly! This is my reminder to help me laugh at my kids and their moods in the same way I can look back and laugh at mine. (Wha!!? BOBBY CARTER?!?? Noooooo!!!! Don't let him see me!!!!)

Date Night

This was the coolest escape room! At one point we punched in a code in a key pad and a bookshelf swung open and revealed a secret door and room. I gave April a heart attack as I grabbed her shoulders and screamed, I was so surprised. Ha, sorry friend. We solved the murder and escaped, though!

Happy New Years!

Hey, only 9 days late! That's not so bad!

Party animal Jon went to our friend's NYE party, despite getting up at 3am in Minneapolis to catch our flight and traveling all day. Apparently he got there just in time for limbo. I hear 4 year-old Charlie won by simply walking under the stick every time.

2020, man! A new year, a new decade! We recently joined the Y, as they had a super sale going on and I figured the kids would love swimming this summer. I've since found out they have lots of fun classes that I have actually been going to. Whoop! I really never make resolutions, but this year it seemed like I had some ideas percolating, so why not call them resolutions?
1) Work out 3 times a week (or more!)
2) Run a 5k. I've probably done 5-7 5K's in my life, but have yet to actually run an entire 5K.
3) Keep up with our church's Bible reading plan for the New Testament.
4) Start an Etsy shop.

Ollie has been pretty into resolutions the last few years. This year one of his goals is to have 3 resolutions because last year he only had 2.  For some reason when he told me this, it cracked me up. Last year his resolutions were to own all the Dog Man books and..... oh man, I can't remember his other one. This year he hopes to improve his mile time and get it under the 6 minute mark (he is currently sitting at 6.14ish), and hasn't picked his others yet. I'll have to remember to come back and edit this when he decides.

Jon's resolution is to figure out what on earth is going on with his job. We've been toying with (or we've been toyed with?!?) the idea of a move for the Texas Forest Service to Austin or College Station for the last few years. 2020 seems like the year we get that whole deal tied up. Fingers crossed.

Your resolution should be to come and see us! Happy 2020!

Walking in a Winter Wonderland!

I can't think of a more idyllic, quintessential way to end our Northern trip. Inches of fresh snow fell and we had the sledding hill all to ourselves.

Jon's before, during, and after.

Nolan went down a couple times in my lap, but the snow was really coming down and he didn't appreciate it blowing in his face.

Ready for action!

Wind and snow made it difficult to look at the camera!

Alexa was a riot when she went down, "NONONONONONONOOOOO!"

Exhausting trekking back up. Whew.

Snowball Fight!!

This was the kind of afternoon memories are made of! So much fun!
And then just like that the fun was over. Back to Lubby.

Until next time, Sethre's!

Mall of America, Vikings, Movies, and More

Mall of America Rides
That tiny hood right there next to Jon is Nolan. ;)

They had a Paw Patrol play place, definitely Nolan's favorite.
Playing in Marshal's fire truck.

Bumper Cars!

Trying out MN's famous Juicy Lucy's.

Bowling! Hat's off to Momo, who told me he was a third of the way to a perfect score.

I stayed home and missed all the fun on bowling day, but was quickly bombarded once everyone was home.

Momo, Eli, Jon, and Ollie went to the Vikings game Sunday.

Meanwhile, Seth and I went to the final Star Wars, Rise of Skywalker. We both absolutely loved it.

Alexa and Mimi took Texas Beaux to this indoor play place. He later told me that this was his favorite part of the entire trip.

Alexa bought the most over the top soda flavors ever and those that had not been sick all week sampled them. I had to leave the room after it got under way....just watching made me queasy.

Nolan and I kept a safe distance from sweet corn soda.

Would you have been in on our selfie, or would you have been sampling buffalo chicken soda?!

Minnie Christmas

Ahhh! I'm scrolling through hundreds of pictures from our time in Minneapolis. Where to even begin??
Perhaps with this picture?
Yep. A holly jolly barf-mas. Mots win grand champion prize for 2019 most difficult holiday guests; with a special MVP spot for yours truly.

Maybe I should start with this picture instead. Here is your Christmas card, which Jon took in front of Alexa and Eli's tree. Print it out and stick it on your fridge! Do me a favor and mail one to me, too!

Christmas morning... waiting for everyone to wake up!!

Almost time!

Annnnd GOOO!

Ollie's been wanting some new footies, and Mimi delivered. He ran and put them on pronto. Then, Jon opened his next present annnnddd.... a Yeti from Alexa!

Oh man guys, fun wasn't over yet... MORE FOOTIES!

We really had a blast opening up presents and laughing at all the socks. Mots definitely got spoiled by all of our loot.

Eli got the boys this super cool marble game called Turing Tumble that mimics computer programming. Honestly, some night when the boys go to bed I want to mess around with it as well. If you have kids that have been into games/toys like snap circuit, check it out.

A fair share of games were opened. And a fair share of Harry Potter items. Even a fair share of Harry Potter games.

Christmas dinner was superb. Jon and I loved the creamed spinach.

Other popular activities included watching Nolan in his lair,

playing in the snow,

and eating (duh). (Please note my new favorite shirt.)

Shopping and napping were also popular. Both for Nolan, ha!

The boys (Eli included) received some laser guns for Christmas, but we never did have a super epic laser battle like I had planned. Next time!

Ok, this post is getting long.... more to come!
