Warning: Mom Bragging Ahead

Oh. My. Word.
My kids are possibly the best runners in the world. It has never been more apparent they are adopted.

In our Elementary School, kids can try out for cross-country starting in third grade. Coach Powell has them run a mile or half mile every week and all the kids keep track of their times and try for personal bests. If you want to try out for cross country, you need to have at least one time under 8 minutes. Although an 8 minute mile sounds down right impossible to me, Seth and Ollie can run that in their sleep. Seth's best mile time is around 7 minutes, 30 seconds. Ollie is much more into cross country than Seth and has been practicing on the weekends trying to improve his time. In September, Ollie could run a mile in around 7 minutes. I thought he had peaked, but he has kept shaving time off week after week until he has gotten his time down to 6 minutes, 30 seconds. So fast! Ollie is currently tied for first place for the best mile time in the school according to Coach Powell's bulletin board.

Last Thursday Coach had the official cross country try outs, where every 3rd, 4th, and 5th grader with a time under 8 minutes gets bused to a cross country course and the fastest 7 boys and 7 girls get to be on the team. Ollie laid out his strategy; his goal was to stay in 3rd to 5th place during the race, then put on a burst of speed after the big hill to try and win the race. Seth's strategy was to pace himself, so he wouldn't die on the big hill. (Seth's strategy made more sense to me. lol)

Long story short (probably too late for that), both boys executed their strategies perfectly. Seth finished strong and came in 8th place. Ollie made the entire race look graceful and easy, and came from 3rd or 4th place right at the end to WIN THE RACE! Our school has around 670 students and little 3rd grade Ollie is the fastest in our entire school. Ollie secured a spot on the team, while Seth will be an alternate. They will practice once or twice a week until the big race on November 5th where Waters Elementary will race against several other elementary schools.

I am really so proud of how hard the boys have worked to keep improving and I love cheering for them! Plus they are probably the best runners in the world, and who doesn't love to be apart of the winning team?!?

Moving into 1st

Go, Seth, go!

Ollie celebrating with Jon after the race. Jon did not make the team, but it's a pretty big deal to even get to try out in third grade.

Other race day sights.

Celebrating after with ice cream.

I hope we have a long future of racing!
